What sets thriving painting businesses apart from those just scraping by? It boils down to effective delegation. The ability to trust your team is not just helpful—it is essential for growth.
Unfortunately, many business owners in our industry struggle to let go and empower their employees. Here’s what I’ve discovered about fostering a loyal and efficient team during my years as a business owner and through insights from some of the most successful painting entrepreneurs I know.
Chances are, your next crew leader or manager is already part of your team. Existing team members who grow into a larger role typically perform better and cost less than those who come in from the outside.
Pay your team well. Regularly check that your wages meet or exceed industry averages. Above-average pay attracts above-average employees, which can significantly boost the performance of your business. It can be hard to swallow short term, but it will help you in the long run.
The best workers typically crave autonomy and perform better when they aren’t micromanaged. Allowing your team control over their daily decisions will likely increase job satisfaction and make them much more likely to stick around.
Encourage friendships within your team. People stay longer at jobs where they feel connected to their colleagues.
Keep an out for my next newsletter, which will cover how to develop your team's skills as they take on more responsibility. 👊
